With the beginning of fall, and torrential down pouring now a daily occurrence in the Pacific Northwest, I am happy to say our crews are safely indoors framing away on Method Homes latest model, the M2. As posted prior, this home is going to Glacier WA and is due to be set around the end of November. This cabin, dubbed the M2, is two Medium cabins from our SML series, that will be connected via a site built entry bridge which will hover somewhere around 2-3 feet off the ground. One of the modules will have the Kitchen, Dining, Living and the other module will consist of two bedrooms and the main bath. The Kitchen module will also have the laundry/mudroom plus a powder bathroom as well. Both have large decks cantilevering off the front including an 8' overhanging eave, much like our Method Cabin. Here are some pictures of the construction in progress and check back soon to see the M2 really start to take shape.
I was recently in DC and had a chance to check out the Solar Decathlon being set up. Unfortunately I was unable to see the homes completed and in competition. Very cool stuff going on at colleges all across the country who compete in this annual competition. Check out solardecathlon.org for more information. For now check out all of the cranes on the Mall. So cool! The students have chosen to build most of the homes prefab or modular. At one point I thought I was witnessing a presidential escort and realized it was a big modular delivery truck being escorted into the city presidential style. The delivery company had a big official looking SUV traveling at high speed from traffic light to traffic light making sure the modules were brought in to the city with no disruption to the flow of the everyday DC life. Plus I think the local law enforcement needs the streets clear of over sized loads.
We couldn't have asked for better weather to have set the Lake Whatcom Cabin. The crane was fired up about 8:30 and by 2:30 this afternoon we were done. 6 hours. Here are some of my pics shot throughout the day when I had the chance, most while waiting on the next mod to be flown in. Our crane company, set crew and delivery company were outstanding today. Especially watching the professionalism of the delivery company and their ability to move mods around with only inches to spare, and into places that just wouldn't seem possible! I know the owners are anxious to see their house in person, so I am not showing any finished pictures until tomorrow's blog. Enjoy some of the set pics!
The Smith Vallee crew has been on site the last couple days installing custom cabinetry in the Lake Whatcom Cabin. All of our cabinetry is made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) plywood and finished using No VOC finishes. Plus its all custom made right up the Mt. Baker Highway very near our shop. You can visit the Smith Vallee website at http://www.smithandvallee.com/
When the Lake Whatcom Cabin leaves our shop next week it will have a good amount of the siding complete. In these pics you can see the beginnings of what will be a siding package composed of all Cedar trim, Hardie horizontal lap siding and Hardie panels, over a rainscreen. You can see the vertical fur-out strips over the building paper. These strips allow the siding to sit just off of the building so that air may circulate behind the siding skin, reducing the possibility of moisture penetration and damage behind the building paper and structure of the home. The set date has been set for next Thursday Sept. 24th. The site framing is also wrapping up within the next few days in preparation for set.
We are having open houses at both our Model Home located near Mt Baker and our shop in Ferndale Washington on this Sunday, September 20th. They are about an hour apart so it will be possible for people to see both and make a day of it.The model home will be open from 11am to 2pm and is located at 7476 Olsen Drive, Deming WA 98244. Directions from Bellingham can be found here: Directions to CabinThe shop will be open from 1pm to 4pm. It is located at 6819 Northgate Way Unit D, Ferndale Wa 98248. It doesn't always show up on a map so:From I-5 North, take the Grandview Exit, Left onto Grandview, Go through a light and over tracks and make the first left onto Northgate. We are the last building on the right and there will be signs. It should be fun and we hope to meet some of you there. The Method Crew
The set for this project has been confirmed for Sept. 24th, just a couple more weeks! The site work is wrapping up and will be moving towards site framing next week. For now here are some images of the slab that was poured this last Tuesday. Some pics during and after the pour. The house is also moving right along in Method Factory. We are now done with first paint coat (final to be on-site for this one) and have everything from Tile to Cabinets and Trim showing up for install.
Yes, another Glacier project! About a year ago, these special clients called us to find out where our model home was located. When we told them Glacier WA they couldn't believe it. When we told them Glacier Springs they really couldn't believe it as they owned some property in the same neighborhood. They quickly booked the model and we are glad to now be moving forward on their own cabin. They have decided to go with a custom Medium design, from the Balance SML Series, combining two of them connected via a bridge. One side of the home will be an open floor plan with the living, dining and kitchen taking up most of the floor with the other side of the home being two bedrooms one bath. Here are some Sketch Up images we just received from Balance Associates. Remember to double and triple click to make these images larger. We will certainly be blogging about this project being as it is another very local project. Be sure to check back on progress as we are hoping to install around Thanksgiving.
